Weather, seasonal changes, and dense tree leaves between your antenna and the broadcaster can affect these multipath problems. If your TV tuner picks up multiple bounced signals, it will try to sort out the correct signal from the repeats, but sometimes the overlapping transmissions leave gaps in the signal, and the result is a signal that fluctuates and produces an erratic or choppy TV picture-it comes in clearly one minute as your tuner locks on to a signal, and it drops the next. For that first split second, though, the image is quite sharp, as well as the audio.ĭo you have any idea why the signal is good for that first split second? Is there any way to fool the TV into thinking it's always in the first split second?Ī: The reason the signal goes in and out is most likely due to “multipath issues.” When a TV signal travels, it bounces off things it hits (such as mountains and high buildings), and those bounces can reach your antenna, confusing your TV’s tuner. Sometimes, the status goes from "Lock" to "Unlock" but only for two or three seconds. When I move to an ABC channel (6-1, 6-2, or 6-3), the SNR starts at 17.5 but quickly (split second) degrades to 16.5 to 17. The info shows that 40 of the 43 channels have SNR of 20 or higher and are very smooth with a status of "Lock."

All 43 channels show modulation of 8VSB, whatever that means. I can view signal information for each channel as I move up and down the channels. I live in Philadelphia and can typically scan 43 channels using an amped Mohu Leaf 50, but the local ABC channel (WPVI) is very shaky.

To learn more about finding the correct antenna for you, you can visit TV Antenna Basics which goes over the benefits of each style.Q: I have an antenna question that I am very curious about. That mileage note is extremely helpful for picking an antenna that is correct for you, as most antennas have a mile recommendation on them to work to best of their ability. If you select the tower icon it will tell you mileage of how far that tower is away from your home. You can click on the name of each channel carrier in the color coded chart to see exactly where they are transmitting their signal from. What will populate is a blue beacon that indicates your home, and color coded chart that will let you know how far away each signal is to the left of the map. To use this site all you need to do is put your address into the search bar and select "Go!".Alternatively, you can use the "Go To My Location!" if that's a feature enabled on your device/browser.

I recommend using the free FCC site, to find signals in your area. I’ve found that you get the most channels when you scan and select “Air.” If you are not happy with those results you can try to scan by “Antenna” too to see that best fits your needs. (The HD antenna catches the signal, and your converter box would change them into analog so your TV can read them.) If you are using a TV that was manufactured in 2008 or earlier you might need a converter box, and HD antenna for your TV.

Like paulmohr stated, digital signals which are now broadcast are different than analog signals that were used prior to 2009. Antennas can be super tricky, but they are also an easy way to get the most out of your TV if you don’t have a cable subscription.
